Our foundation began shortly after Benjamin Jacob Doran was senselessly
beaten to death on March 31st, 2003 by two complete strangers that claimed they thought he was someone else.
Benny was a charming, loving, thoughtful young man that had never been in a fight in his life. In May of 2003,
a very successful benefit was held to begin the Ben Doran Foundation. We had the paperwork completed and were
granted 501 (c) 3 status in January 2004. Rome Hanson and Maggie Doran are the co-founders. We have
worked to raise awareness and to be there to support victims of violent crime. We have met with many legislators
and nonprofit leaders in the Twin Cities to build bridges of support to victims of every type. We are
grassroots and depend on financial help from the community.
The shock, disbelief and absolute outrage that I feel is what formed the
foundation. In the 2005 legislative session, with the help of State Representative John Lesch, we had
passed "Benny's Law" a state law that gives gang members who kill anyone under the age of eighteen, "no
good time" when they are eligible for release. In September 2007 the foundation requested and were granted
a Day of Remembrance for homicide victims from the governor. We have come this far because of the generous support of our family and friends.
We've hosted eleven benefits since Ben's foundation was formed. We have also received
support through local community grants. We NEED donations to keep us going!
We are grassroots and depend on every contribution.
